What Is Dry Sift Hash? The Classic Sieved Concentrate Explained

Easygreen CBD 0 comments

Dry sift is one of the oldest and simplest ways to make hash, and it is the method behind many classic styles. If you have wondered what dry sift hash is and how it is made, this guide explains everything. It is information only, and we make no medical or health claims.

What is dry sift hash?

Dry sift hash is a concentrate made by sieving the resin from dried hemp flower and then pressing it together. The loose powder collected during sieving is called kief, or pollen, and when pressed it becomes hash. Because it uses no water and no solvents, dry sift is considered one of the cleanest, most traditional methods there is.

How is dry sift hash made?

  1. Drying: hemp flower is properly dried and cured first.
  2. Sieving: the flower is gently agitated over fine mesh screens, so the resin glands (trichomes) fall through as a fine powder.
  3. Grading: using screens of different sizes separates the resin into grades of purity.
  4. Pressing: the collected kief is pressed into hash, or left loose as pollen.

That loose stage is exactly what we sell as CBD pollen hash. To understand the raw material, read our guide, What Is Kief?

Dry sift vs bubble hash vs charas

All three are traditional and solventless, but they separate resin differently. Dry sift uses sieving, bubble hash uses ice water, and charas is rubbed by hand. Classic Moroccan hash is a well-known dry-sift style. Our overview of how CBD hash is made compares them all.

Why do people value dry sift?

Dry sift is prized because it is simple, solventless, and, done carefully, produces a clean concentrate that keeps the natural aroma of the flower. Higher grades, made by finer sifting, can be exceptionally pure.

How strong is dry sift hash?

Being concentrated resin, dry sift typically carries more CBD by weight than the flower it came from. The reliable measure is the batch lab report (COA). Our guide on CBD strength explains how to read it.

Is CBD dry sift hash legal in the UK?

Dry sift made from hemp is a hemp concentrate, so it sits in the same legal grey area as other hemp hash and flower. CBD is legal, but plant-derived hash is treated differently in law. See Is CBD Hash Legal in the UK? Information only, not legal advice.

How to store and use it

Keep dry sift and pollen airtight, cool and dark to protect the aroma. Our guide on how to use CBD hash covers the options, from adding to flower to pressing your own.

Frequently asked questions

Is dry sift the same as kief?

Kief is the loose powder sieved from flower. Dry sift hash is that kief pressed together, though the terms are often used loosely.

Is dry sift good quality?

It can be excellent, especially higher grades. As always, judge by aroma, texture and the COA.

Does dry sift use solvents?

No. It uses only sieving, making it a solventless concentrate.

The bottom line

Dry sift hash is made by sieving resin from dried hemp flower into kief, then pressing it. It is one of the cleanest, most traditional methods, and the loose kief is sold as pollen. Check the COA and store it well.
