Static Hash: What It Actually Is, and Why Everyone Suddenly Wants It

Static hash is dry sift that has been cleaned up with static electricity. That is the whole idea. You sieve trichomes off dried flower the way people have done for centuries, and then, instead of accepting whatever plant debris comes through the screen with them, you use the fact that resin heads and plant matter take opposite electrical charges to pull the two apart.

The result is a powder that is mostly trichome head and very little else. It is not a new extraction method. It is a finishing step, and until recently it was a hand skill practised by a small number of people who were quietly very good at it.

What actually happens

Rub two dry materials together and they exchange electrons. That is the triboelectric effect — the same thing that makes a balloon stick to a jumper. In a pile of sifted kief, plant biomass and trichome heads sit at opposite ends of that exchange.

A paper published in the Journal of Cannabis Research in May 2025 was the first to measure it properly. The findings are worth knowing because they contradict a fair amount of what gets said about static hash online:

  • Plant material picks up a positive charge. Trichomes pick up a negative one, in the region of 20 to 100 picocoulombs.
  • Trichome heads are also far denser than stalk material — 308 kg/m³ against 118 kg/m³ — so charge and density can be used together.
  • The process works best at around 15 °C and 30–34% relative humidity.
  • A single pass produced 80–95% round trichome heads, against 40–50% for conventional methods and 50–60% for screening alone.

The freezing myth

You will see it written everywhere that static hash starts by freezing the material. The research says the opposite. Charge generation collapses at sub-zero temperatures — at −18 °C it falls to zero, and with no charge there is no separation. Cold rooms at around 13 °C are real and are how commercial operations run, because low humidity matters and cold air holds less moisture. Deep-freezing the feedstock is not part of it.

If a seller tells you their static hash is made from frozen material, they are describing ice-water extraction, or they have muddled two processes. Fresh-frozen input belongs to bubble hash and, further down the chain, to rosin.

How it is made, step by step

  1. Dry and cure properly. Static separation is sensitive to moisture, so the input has to be right before anything else happens.
  2. Screen it. Typically a coarse pass at around 250 microns, then a finer one at 74 microns. This is ordinary dry sift up to this point.
  3. Charge and separate. By hand this means working the kief across a smooth surface — parchment, a tray, a gloved palm — until the debris migrates and can be lifted away. At scale it means running the powder past charged electrode plates in a controlled-humidity room.
  4. Repeat. Each pass raises purity and costs yield. Three passes is common. Colour shifts from pale blonde on the first pull to darker blonde on the second, with a green cast creeping in by the third.

Machines exist now. Sambo Creeck Filtration in Miami released a tabletop unit in 2023 at around $35,000, and roughly twenty labs worldwide run them. A hand sifter might produce a kilo a day; the machine does closer to eight. A cheaper home-scale unit was shown at MJBizCon in late 2025, which is probably why the term has spread so quickly in the last eighteen months.

What good static hash looks like

Pale. Sandy. Dry enough to pour but with enough resin that it clumps under light pressure. Hold it to the light and a high-grade sift looks almost granular — you are looking at individual gland heads rather than a homogeneous powder.

The grading language you will meet is the melt scale borrowed from bubble hash. Six-star, or "full melt", is supposed to mean around 99% intact heads: it bubbles and liquefies almost completely, leaving next to no residue.

Worth being blunt about this: those star ratings are visual estimates with no standardised methodology behind them. Nobody is sending samples to a lab to certify head purity. A seller calling something six-star is giving you their opinion, and appearance tells you nothing at all about cannabinoid content. Use the melt test yourself if you want to know — a genuine full melt leaves a clean bowl.

The honest summary: static sift and bubble hash arrive at a similar destination by different roads. Bubble hash uses water and cold to snap brittle trichomes off; static sift uses charge to separate what a screen has already knocked loose. Static keeps everything dry, which some people prefer for terpene reasons. Bubble hash from fresh-frozen material generally wins on aroma.

Is it actually new?

No. Static techniques are documented in Pakistan and Morocco going back generations, and Sam the Skunkman was promoting the method in 1988 after seeing it used in Africa. What is new is that it has been measured, mechanised and given a marketing name. That is not a criticism — it is the normal life cycle of a craft technique.

It is also worth saying that "PlasmaStatic" is a trademarked product line, not a category. If you see "plasma static hash" sold as a distinct type of hash, that is a brand name being used as a descriptor.

What it costs

On the THC side of the market in the US, static sift has been reported at around $126 a gram, which the trade press cheerfully points out is more than gold. That should come down as more machines land.

On the CBD side in the UK, prices are ordinary. Static-labelled CBD hash from UK retailers sits broadly in line with other solventless product — roughly £4.50 to £7 a gram at small quantities, dropping toward £3.50 in bulk. We have compiled the wider picture in CBD hash prices in the UK.

Is static CBD hash worth buying?

If you like dry, crumbly hash that heats evenly and does not need warming before you can work with it, yes. Static sift is one of the easiest textures to use — it goes straight into a joint or a vaporiser bowl without any fuss, which is not true of the oilier grades. If you are buying it because a six-star label implies laboratory-verified purity, be more sceptical. Ask for the batch report, look at the cannabinoid figures, and judge the melt yourself.

Things people claim about static hash that we could not verify

  • Microplastic contamination. The argument goes that PVC pipe, plastic tubs and cellophane are all in the workflow, so plastic ends up in the product. It is technically plausible. We could not find a single lab study, trade body statement or piece of credible reporting to support it, so we are not going to repeat it as fact.
  • A specifically British surge in popularity. There is no data. The term has spread across Europe, Amsterdam coffeeshops market it, and UK sellers have picked it up. Anything more specific than that is guesswork.
  • Potency claims from appearance. Pale, sandy and free-flowing tells you the sift was clean. It does not tell you what is in it.

A note on UK law

Static hash made from cannabis is a controlled drug in the UK, and so is any hash made from cannabis, regardless of how it was extracted. Under section 37(1) of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, "cannabis resin" has its own statutory definition — "the separated resin, whether crude or purified, obtained from any plant of the genus Cannabis" — and no percentage appears in it.
