What is bubble hash?
Bubble hash, also called ice-water hash, is a concentrate made by separating the resin from hemp flower using cold water and agitation rather than heat or solvents. The name comes from the way high-quality examples can bubble when heated. It is prized because the process uses only ice, water and filtration, which many people consider one of the cleanest ways to make hash.
Language note worth having: "Ice-O-Lator" is a Dutch brand name — Mila Jansen's — that became generic, in the way Hoover did. If you see it on a label it is not a different product.
How is bubble hash made?
The method is elegant in its simplicity:
- Chill: hemp flower is placed in ice water, which makes the brittle resin glands (trichomes) freeze and become easy to break off.
- Agitate: gentle stirring knocks the frozen trichomes loose from the plant material.
- Filter: the mixture is passed through a series of fine mesh bags of decreasing size, which catch the resin at different grades.
- Dry and press: the collected resin is dried carefully, then gently pressed.

Micron bags and what the numbers mean
Those filtration bags are graded in microns, and a typical set runs 220, 190, 160, 120, 90, 73, 45 and 25, largest on top. Which bag caught the resin is how bubble hash gets graded.
The 73 to 120 micron band is the premium fraction, because it holds the largest, most intact gland heads with the best ratio of oil to cuticle. Above it you pick up more plant contamination; below it you get immature heads and fragments. Producers also grade one to six stars by how completely the hash melts — five to six star is "full melt", three to four is half melt, and anything below three is generally destined for cooking.
What bubble hash becomes next
Bubble hash is the starting point for two of the most sought-after concentrates in Europe. Piatella is six-star bubble hash from fresh-frozen material, vacuum-sealed and cold-cured at 4–10 °C for four to six weeks — no press and no heat involved. Hash rosin is bubble hash pressed between heated plates to squeeze out the oil.
Both are expensive for the same underlying reason: the wash itself returns only a small fraction of what went in.
