Start with the lab report
Before anything you can see or smell, the single most important marker of quality is a third party lab report (COA). It confirms the CBD content and the THC level, so you know exactly what you are buying. Reputable hash always comes with one. If a seller cannot provide a COA, that is a red flag.
Ask for the one matching your batch number rather than a generic site-wide PDF. The melt test
The most useful physical test you can run yourself. Put a very small amount on a hot surface and watch what happens. Genuine full-melt hash bubbles and liquefies almost completely, leaving next to no residue. Lower grades char and leave a black mark behind, because what is left is plant matter rather than resin.
This matters because "six-star" and "full melt" grading is done by eye, with no standardised methodology behind it. A seller calling something six-star is giving you their opinion. The melt test is you checking it.
Aroma
Good CBD hash has a rich, distinctive aroma from its terpenes. A strong, pleasant, resinous scent is usually a positive sign. A flat, dull or chemical smell suggests lower quality or poor storage. Texture and consistency
Quality hash tends to be pliable and workable. Softer hash usually crumbles or bends easily, while very firm hash should soften slightly with gentle warmth. Hash that is rock hard and impossible to work with, or overly dry and dusty, can indicate age or lower grade material.

Colour
Hash comes in a range of colours from blonde to dark brown, depending on how it was made and the material used. Colour alone does not determine quality, different traditional styles look different. There is one exception worth knowing. For piatella, colour is a quality signal — the whole point of a cold cure is to avoid oxidation, so correct piatella runs pale gold to amber. Dark, greasy piatella means poorer input or a badly controlled cure, whatever the seller tells you.
